What is Cybersecurity and the Types of Cybersecurity Threats

IT Professionals know the importance of cybersecurity. But what is cybersecurity? And what are the types of cybersecurity threats?

Cybersecurity, also referred to as Information Security or Computer Security, refers to the practice of protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. These attacks are usually aimed to extort money or interrupt normal business processes by accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information.

With a lot of sensitive data from the government, military, corporate, financial, and medical organizations, then cybersecurity is definitely important. In order to defend their systems from threats, everyone benefits from advanced cyber defense programs.

Types of Cybersecurity Threats

Now there are a lot of different threats and are still growing because of the development of technologies which open up new avenues for cyberattacks. These are the most common examples of cybersecurity threats.

  • Malware – is a type of software that is designed to cause damage or gain unauthorized access to a system. Examples of malware are computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and spyware.
  • Ransomware – is another software that is designed to block the user’s access to his/her files or the computer system through encryption. The idea is to extort money (usually in bitcoin) to the victim. Even paying the ransom does not guarantee that files or the system be recovered.
  • Phishing – is the practice of sending fraudulent emails or messages, mostly resembling the ones from reputable sources. The intention of this is to steal sensitive data such as login information or credit card numbers.
  • Social Hacking – is a tactic that relies on human interactions. The aim is to trick users into breaking security procedures to gain sensitive information such as the user’s password. Social engineering can also be a combination of any of the threats listed above. Attackers aim to make the user more likely to click on links, download malware, or trust malicious sources.

Cybersecurity is an ever-changing field as the volume and sophistication of cyberattacks grow each day. So, it is important to get updated on the latest trend and advances in the field.
