To protect Filipinos from online scams, Google recently announced the Enhanced Google Play Protect feature for Android devices.
The Philippines is facing a growing threat of financial fraud and scams. This largely due to the widespread use of sideloaded apps. These apps are often disguised as harmless quick loan or instant reward games. And most of them can steal personal data or funds.
To combat this, Google has introduced Enhanced Google Play Protect. It’s a security feature that offers real-time scanning to protect users from sideloaded apps. This feature uses AI-driven evasion methods to detect malicious apps. It has improved user safety in India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and the Philippines.
Enhanced Google Play Protect has already blocked over 3.2 million high-risk app install attempts in the Philippines. As of February 10, the app has prevented potential financial losses thats equivalent to ₱3.2 million saved per blocked install.
“Online safety is crucial in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. Google is reinforcing its commitment to user security with the launch of Enhanced Play Protect in the Philippines. This innovation automatically blocks the installation of potentially harmful apps from unofficial sources. We applaud Google’s efforts to protect Filipinos online. By working together, we can build a stronger foundation for internet safety in the country.”
Emilio Benito Aquino, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairperson and CEO.
The power of local partnerships to create a safer online space
In addition, Google has also collaborated with content creators to promote online safety. This include creators like EduCreator Coach Lyqa and Ben&Ben. The collaboration included a YouTube video debunking cybersecurity myths and a song promoting internet safety through the use of the new feature.
Google is also introducing an Ilocano-language version of its #YOUTHink media literacy publication. This aims to reach more Filipinos across different regions and enhance access to important information. The initiative not only emphasizes Google’s commitment to promoting media literacy, but also recognizes the diverse linguistic landscape of the Philippines. Whis will also be available in Filipino, English, and Cebuano.
“Google is deeply committed to digital responsibility and internet safety. This commitment drives us to develop innovative products like Enhanced Google Play Protect and collaborate closely with local NGOs, communities, and ecosystem partners. Together, we can build a safer and more secure online space for Filipinos.”
