PLDT Wireless unit, Smart Communications Inc., has made the first successful Smart Wifi Calling (VoWifi) over live network in Cebu.
Along with their technology partner Huawei Technologies Inc., it was the first successful Voice over Wifi (VoWifi) call outside Metro Manila. Smart VoWifi or Smart Wifi Calling lets customers make and receive calls and text messages over a Wifi connection by using their smartphone’s native dialer and without having to install a third-party app.
“As we invest in future-proofing our network, we are continuously innovating to add more communication options for our customers,” said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering. “We look forward to letting our customers make high-definition Wifi calls soon, especially via PLDT Home Wifi and Smart Wifi.”
“This pioneering initiative is a key part of PLDT and Smart’s integrated efforts to continuously improve and evolve its voice services”, Tamayo added.
Smart has also made the country’s first Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) mobile call last year. It uses LTE or 4G to conduct calls, enabling VoLTE-capable devices to connect voice calls faster with crystal clear quality.
